i just got finished with a "Little Egypt" costume that actually turned out great. It made me wonder... Are there a lot of dancers that have favorite costumes from history, like a special Samia Gamal or vintage Serena?
Just wondering...

  • Though she wasn't a belly dancer, some of Mae West's costumes look like they could be adapted for belly dance.
    • I know this is probably soooo cliche'...but, midieval period really speaks to me...there's sooo much room for crossover, the vests, petticoats, off-shoulder blouses....I think it was a gorgeous period of dress for women as far as respecting their form without restricting it...i.e...Victorian Era...which I also find very aesthetically pleasing...just not something I'd want to wear everyday, or even BD in. I'm thinking Renn Faire, which I'm sure quite a few of us attend when it's in town.
      • Funny thing is, what most people think of when they think "Medieval" is more like what you'd see at a Renaissance Faire, which is actually post-medieval with a healthy dose of fantasy. In the actual Middle Ages (5th to 15th centuries) European women's clothing was very modest and often shapeless; the sideless surcote (www.wodefordhall.com/surcote.htm) was denounced from pulpits as "the gates of hell" because it allowed the viewer to see the woman's tight-fitting dress (and hence her curves) beneath. Heavens!

That said, of course, anybody can use whatever historical interpretation they like. I recently did a Steampunk BD costume and have also made a recreation of one of Mata Hari's costumes. I'm also tempted to do Mae West's circus-dance dress from "I'm No Angel". :)

And of course many tribal dancers wear traditional and/or historical Middle-Eastern costume such as Persian or Turkish, especially in the SCA.
        • Hey now!
I've seen some pretty sexy cotehardies lol..and 8th c viking arpron dresses (not tube contrustion) were also form fitting. I'd say that 13 - 15th centuries were filled with period sexiness.

          I just had to say.
          • all of my Norse apron dresses are form fitting. Some more than others. and I have to say... I feel sexy in em. =)
Is it strange to feel sexy in two layers of linen and one layer of wool? then all my preeeteee beads and such.
  • I'm dull… I go back to the drapery and swags of ancient Greece, to a lesser extent ancient Rome.

Not flattering at all on my figure, but it still takes a lot of skill to get fabric drape properly, especially if it's in "whole cloth" fashion, and without the help of a sewing machine.

Then again, I love the footwear too…
