i just got finished with a "Little Egypt" costume that actually turned out great. It made me wonder... Are there a lot of dancers that have favorite costumes from history, like a special Samia Gamal or vintage Serena?
Just wondering...

Though she wasn't a belly dancer, some of Mae West's costumes look like they could be adapted for belly dance.

I know this is probably soooo cliche'...but, midieval period really speaks to me...there's sooo much room for crossover, the vests, petticoats, off-shoulder blouses....I think it was a gorgeous period of dress for women as far as respecting their form without restricting it...i.e...Victorian Era...which I also find very aesthetically pleasing...just not something I'd want to wear everyday, or even BD in. I'm thinking Renn Faire, which I'm sure quite a few of us attend when it's in town.

Deana and Sarah from Tribe of Kismet did that for the Tribalondon show:

and a clearer shot of Deana which shows the costume better:

Funny thing is, what most people think of when they think "Medieval" is more like what you'd see at a Renaissance Faire, which is actually post-medieval with a healthy dose of fantasy. In the actual Middle Ages (5th to 15th centuries) European women's clothing was very modest and often shapeless; the sideless surcote (www.wodefordhall.com/surcote.htm) was denounced from pulpits as "the gates of hell" because it allowed the viewer to see the woman's tight-fitting dress (and hence her curves) beneath. Heavens!
That said, of course, anybody can use whatever historical interpretation they like. I recently did a Steampunk BD costume and have also made a recreation of one of Mata Hari's costumes. I'm also tempted to do Mae West's circus-dance dress from "I'm No Angel". :)
And of course many tribal dancers wear traditional and/or historical Middle-Eastern costume such as Persian or Turkish, especially in the SCA.

I'm dull… I go back to the drapery and swags of ancient Greece, to a lesser extent ancient Rome.
Not flattering at all on my figure, but it still takes a lot of skill to get fabric drape properly, especially if it's in "whole cloth" fashion, and without the help of a sewing machine.
Then again, I love the footwear too…

I love these images

The images here are nice too, but they're only available as collage sheets, ie, the images can not be used individually -- sad, because I'd be happy to buy a download or cd with the individual images.

oh...wow...that's a lot of inspiration...love the fairies...love the different BDs...but, yeah, it's not too cool that they're only collage sheets and you can just barely see the pics...and the first link is blocked here at work....durn Barracuda.

Helen...
cut and crop!
That's how I use my Collage sheets! =)

Sheets from this same place? What is the resolution like??
If I could cut out the image and blow it up to say 4 x 5 inch or larger, then it would be worth it to buy the sheets. But if the resolution is really low and the picture fuzzes out then I won't mess with the sheets, I'll stick to individual images..

Hi! I am Lunagirl, the creator of those collage sheets, and I'm happy to say that the images ARE available on CD!
They are offered individually in larger size and nice resolution on several image CDs that we've also created and published. You'll find them here: www.lunagirl.com/W-Vintage-Photos.htm. Probably the most bellydancers are on Volume Three.
We also have many other types of images - see all categories here: www.lunagirl.com.
I am a bellydancer myself and love these old postcards and vintage costumes. I hope you'll visit sometime. -

Luna the first link didn't work for me! ???

Hi ~ I can't figure out why the first link doesn't work as it's a good address! But it doesn't. Hmmm. Try this one instead:
www.summertownsun.com/lunagir...otos.htm
Also, the link straight to LUNAGIRL.COM at www.lunagirl.com does seem to work, and once there just click on the category for "Antique Photos" to see all of our Ladies Photos collections on CD.
Thanks for your interest!

I've seen some really fabulous Mata Hari costumes here on Tribe, too, and the odd recreation of some of the old "Orientale" postcard costumes. Not so much about the actual historical dancers, oddly... ;). I keep planning to make a belt with the long, slim panels you can see on some of the old Ghawazee dancer pics, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.
Any pics of the Little Egyptcostume? -

Hopefully, I'll have pictures coming soon. She promised me copies, after she has the photo shoot. The anticipation is the hardest part!

Wahoo! I got pictures! I'm having trouble posting pix to Tribe (operator error I'm sure) but here's the link to Flikr...

i think i'm gonna go a bit Southern... the things that have been worn up until only decades ago in the sub-Saharan regions are suited quite well to TFBD. sorry, that's not a Time, it are various Places!

When you said historical, this popped into my head. Loved watching them live. They knocked my block off.
