What do YOU want for a Tutorial?

I've suddenly wound up with a bit of free time, and of course that means it's time to make another costume ;) I've got a couple of ideas sketched out and I'll document the process as I go but i was curious....

what would YOU like to see a tutorial on?

so far, i've done tut's on covering a bra, re-purposing a ball skirt into a cabaret style circle skirt, and re-purposing a big top into a ren faire style peasant top...what else would you like to see? panel skirts are easy - i'll probably do that too - but i was thinking perhaps the mermaid skirt and maybe also some easy gauntlets?

looking for ideas...what do you need help on?

"Home made" vs. professional costumes

Does anyone sort of prefer the look of a more "home made" costume over a super fancy professional one? I think professional costumes can be stunning, but I find that I really love the look of a lot of home made ones. My old teacher used to make the most beautiful costumes. It was she who inspired me to want to learn how to make my own. I believe her teacher still makes her own costumes, and I think they're just as beautiful as a costume made in Turkey or some place.

Mermaid Pants

Ya'all know what I'm talking about, right? The pants that hug the hips and thighs and then just below the knee they flare out, or have slits, or whatever. Some even have a "flappy thing" up around the hips that looks like a built-in hip scarf.

Who sells these? Who makes patterns for these? Where can I get these? How do I make these?

I think that covers all the possible questions that people could want to answer.
BTW, I found out you can't just go to Google and type "mermaid pants + dance." Doesn't take you anywhere you want to go.

Trying to find non-tummy revealing costume in blue or green for performance July 19, 2008

Here is my problem. I am about to have my second dance performance and my teacher wants me to have a second costume for musical track 2. Catch is she said she would rather we not have tummy showing. Something about "American dancers care too much about how they look" Thing is, I like my belly showing as I am not ashamed of my pouch or stretch marks and most costumes I see are tummy revealing. Probably doesn't help I want it in blue or green, most beledi dresses I see are black or red and they are online. I have until July 19, to get this figured out.

Sewing supply source (x-post)...

In my tribe travels, I've come across folks who aren't close to fabric stores or who's fabric stores have limited selection on some of the costume supplies we use all the time.

Check out www.atlantathread.com as a source for general sewing supplies and a few notions...especially the wider elastics (up to 4") and the heavy duty hooks like we use on bras & stuff....fabric glue, Fray-Chek, needles, pins, bra cups, etc......oh, and lots-n-lots of thread.

I went over there yesterday 'cause they're only a few miles from my house. It's a warehouse shipping center - there's no retail store. Even I will have to order by phone and go pick it up...but the guy I spoke with was nice and the few conversations I overheard ((everyone works a phone & computer)) were pleasant. The guy gave me a sample of the 3" and 4" elastic and a bag of heavy duty hook-n-eyes. And these are hooks I've never seen in the fabric stores - they're pretty sturdy looking. The elastic is what I've found in the fabric stores - when I can find it.

I haven't done any price comparisons - but if it's a more reliable source for wide elastic and heavy duty hooks <<for some reason, JoAnn's is a hit-or-miss on these>>, I won't mind if it's close to retail price.

I just spot checked a couple of items
FrayChek - AtlantaThread $2.48 JoAnn's $2.95
Liquid Stitch - AtlantaThread $3.00 JoAnn's $3.59

belt forms?

ok, so after hours of trying to come up with a proper base form for my first belt i've just about given up.
i'm trying to make something more or less like the "Vixen" style http://www.sugarpetals.com/bra_belt.asp
this is where you all come in :)

either you know how to help me make a well-shaped base.... it can't be that hard, can it??? lol
or you know other websites than sugar petals that sell pre-made belt bases or forms.... (though i would actually prefer to learn how-to myself)

in both cases i'd be eternally grateful :)

Tights and problems…

I have a bunch of nicely textured tights that I want to wear for bellydancing. The problem is, they're all high-waisted. They come up over my bellybutton instead of stopping at my hips. I like dancing with my midriff exposed.

How can I use these tights I have, without rolling down the tops, creating bulk at the hips?

Is there a good way to "cut off" the tops of the tights without either stretching the top out or keeping it from stretching at all?

Thanks.
(Or is there a good place to shop for low-rise tights?)

Can anyone tell me where I can buy headbands/hair decorations like the ones I always see people like Rachel Brice, Zoe, etc., wearing on their heads? It looks like they wear several decorated headbands with flowers, etc., and I really love the look of it! Does anyone know, do they make them themselves, or can you purchase them somewhere? Also, how do those girls get all that stuff to stay on their heads when they dance? I would love any ideas for making this stuff myself if anyone knows how! :)

REDUCED -- Turkish turquoise costume

I'm moving soon, so I really need to clean out the closet...and so I'm reducing this costume to $135.

Here's the description again:

Turkish style costume, never worn, and purchased in April in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul.

Bra--sequins all over, lovely silver trim, and beading detail. Bra band is around 37 inches total (and I believe around a C cup), and can easily be adjusted to make smaller. Plenty of strap length to adjust as you wish.
Cool super-Turkish zig-zag edge on the cups.

Belt is around 36 inches long, and comes in two identical pieces (front and back) that can easily be adjusted for size. Cool zig-zag edge on front and back. Silver trim and neat beading/sequin detail.

Also comes with very Turkish, "Wonder Woman"-style headband, and armband.

ALSO I am throwing in a FREE extra headband, velvet and a darker Turquoise than the costume, with silver trim.
Covering a Bra: A Costume Tutorial

Hi all!

I made this quick (and very very very simple) photo tutorial on how to cover a bra for a costume. Thought it might help some folks out here, too. The photos aren't so great as my home lighting is odd, but I think the point gets across. I'll be adding a few more photos in a bit to show how the final decorated bra turned out, but so far you can at least get the entire process of the step-by-step. if you all like it, i'd be happy to do some more soon (like how to do a cabaret mermaid skirt, how to make a panel skirt, etc). I know the resources are online already, but I find the actual photos help me a lot too.

ps - yes, this is SO for a pastel and furry tribal fusion costume. i confess. sue me. ha!

Buyer Beware: Isis Exchange

Buyer Beware: ISIS EXCHANGE

“How to make Egyptian dressmakers starve by ordering & returning a belly dance costume”

Great place to order from, if you don’t inquire as to when your costume will be delivered, or need to make an exchange. Or expect them to do much to follow through... Yup.. that’s “good customer service”

http://www.isisexchange.com/

Isis Exchange’s BBB Report: http://www.bbbsoutheastflorida.org/BBBWeb/Forms/Business/CompanyReportPage_Expository.aspx?CompanyID=11008931

----------Back Story------------------------------------------------

My troupe pitched in to buy me a nice, professional styled costume as a way to thank me for all of the work I put into getting our troupe up and running.

Being a non-standard portioned person (minimal chest, broad hips, plus a jiggly mid section), I knew that I would need to order a custom costume to have a matching bra & belt. I found a beautiful and unique costume at Isis Exchange and I was sooo happy to have discovered a company that not only offered a unique custom made costume, but a reasonable price. Without much hesitation, I ordered from them in early December ‘07.

In Jan ‘08, I received my costume- only to discover, that indeed the costume was beautiful, but by no means made to my exact measurements (as promised by Isis Exchange). The single piece gown’s torso was incredibly long– if the thigh slit sat where it was supposed to, then the hard cupped breast forms came to just under my chin! If I put the boobs where they are meant to go, the thigh slit was just above my knee. This was not a costume I could dance in! Not to mention that the zipper popped, and there were several highly visible white tailor paint markings across the bodice (that I could not easily remove). Sadly, I had to return this gown and exchange it for something more safe (ie not incur the length problem) and that could be produced in a shorter time frame for my March show. Because all exchanges are not offered a refund, but a 75% credit to be used at the store, I was stuck re-ordering another costume.

I spoke with Mou, the production manager, and he was very friendly and seemed to understand my dilemma. He helped me select another costume, and I was feeling pretty good about the whole thing, tho’ more than a little nervous about the time frame. He told me that my order would be submitted right away.

Through out the rest of Jan, I had not received a invoice or purchase order, so I emailed the company, and I received an invoice on Feb 12, 2008. I have honestly come to believe that my order was not even submitted until I contacted the company!!! Anyway this invoice had an expected date of March 5. Sweet! 10 days before my performance! I was very excited.

----------Here’s where it gets more dramatic-------------

March 10— No costume. I called the company, and managed to speak with Billy. I explained my concerns to him. I was informed that my costume would arrive early next week (two days too late for my performance), I asked if was joking, and said that this is unacceptable. He told me he would look into and call me back by the end of the day.

March 11- Getting more worried, I called Isis Exchange. No answer. I left a message. I called back an hour later, this I time I spoke with a woman who assured me that she would look into the matter.

No response 2 hours later, I called again, and spoke with Billy yet again. He wanted to know what was wrong with the original costume. I explained the fit problem, and I was informed that Isis Exchange employs a dressmaker who is 55 years old, near retirement, and that at least 8-10 costumes recently have been returned to fit problems!! I was shocked! Wow! 8-10 people have been through what I am going through? Have they gotten an apology, unlike myself? Billy again assured me that he would call me back, after he spoke with his production manager. I asked when I could expect to hear back from him, he did not provide an answer, so I informed him that I wanted to hear back from him within 15-30 minutes.

The afternoon passed, and I had no contact from them. So I called again (If you ever need to call Isis Exchange, expect to not have the phone answered at any time in your ordering experience until you call them at least 10 times– seriously). During this time, I left two messages- one apologizing for my earlier shortness and I provided two solutions for Isis Exchange... the first being that my costume is overnighted from Egypt to me, at no additional shipping charge, the second the costume arrives late with a refund. My second message was a request to get the promised call back.

Finally my phone rings, and it’s Billy– he begins by saying “you called me 20 times- I had to step out of the office. Our internet is down. I’m working off a laptop, I have to go outside to find a wireless internet connection.” I offered to forward all of the emails I had from Isis Exchage so he could access my records. I was now informed that my costume was still in production, that there was no way I could have in time for my show. I was also told that my costume should have fit, as the hips stretch to 54" (and that folks is why the zipper popped!). I am embarrassed to say, but I not so kindly expressed my disappointment. Our phone conversation ends with him saying that he will contact his production manager (Mou) and that only Mou has the authority to issue refunds.

Three hours later- I hear from Mou. Mou wanted to know what was wrong my original costume. I explained to him the details. He then asked what I wanted from them. I repeated my two options for them. I was told, and I had to repeat this back to him twice out of disbelief- he offered to send me my original ill-fitting costume, or to send my the second costume as soon as it came (early next week). There was no way my costume would be shipped any sooner. Again, I explained my disappointment to him. I was then asked again what I wanted, “I said an apology would go along way right now.” He then shouted at me, and said that I was being a very difficult customer– “that there was no way of pleasing me, that he had already lost a significant amount of money a costume that was perfectly fine and fit me, that he had no desire to do business with me, and that people in Egypt were starving” (no I am not kidding here) because of my returning a costume. I was informed by Mou that “handmade items are not perfect, and that there are always errors....that an exact fit is not possible” Well, of course, I became the difficult customer he made me to be. Unfortunately, we shouted back and forth at each other. Finally, he offered to cancel my order and give me 75% refund less his shipping expenses (of what I am not exactly sure...the costume? A check in the mail?). I was pushing for a full refund and an apology– which wasn’t happening. I finally kowtowed, and had to shout this over his continuing litany of “difficult customer, starving Egyptians, I don’t want to do business with you” to be heard. I agreed to accept the second costume late, but as long as he understood how disappointed I am with Isis Exchange and that I would try to warn as many dancers as possible from using his company.

So– yes I must admit at times in dealing with Isis Exchange over the past two days I have acted like a tantrum two year old. I am not proud of my behavior, but sadly it took so much action on my behalf to find out the status of my order, and to come with up solutions to this debacle. I did not want to rip off Isis Exchange, but I did want what was promised to me when it was promised to me. The costume is due to arrive a few days post performance :-( I am hoping that will be a good fit, or at least can be altered on my end to achieve that sought after fit.

I realize not everyone has had a bad experience with this company. I read in an earlier posting, that someone had a friend who had a terrible experience with Isis Exchange, but with no explanation why. I decided to share my dealings with them to help provide better information, and to prevent someone living through this same ordeal. Hopefully this costume will provide me with enough dancing bliss to be able to overcome this crudy experience.

If you choose to order through Isis Exchange, may you have a wonderful experience and be treated well.

Please contact me if you have any questions-

-----Isis Exchange’s Verbage-----------------------------

According to their website:

Off the listing of the Original Costume I ordered: (CST005)
“If you are not in rush, you can order this costume at your exact measurements.”

Return Policy:

“If you received your package in a bad condition or simply you do not like the item within 3 days of receiving it, you can ship it back for a full refund or an immediate exchange for no additional S&H costs. No questions asked!

Any special orders can not be returned for a full refund. However, they can be returned for 75% of the purchase price as a Store Credit only and it must be returned within 3 days of receipt.”

As for the starving Egyptians:
(again from their website, under “about us”)

“We are firm advocate against child labor & "Sweat Shops". We personally see to it that our employees are fairly compensated for their hard work, have good working conditions and fair pay.”

Turquoise Turkish costume for sale!

Hi all!

Long time lurker, first time joiner/poster...

I'm selling a Turkish style costume--never worn and purchased in April in the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul.

NEVER worn or adjusted.

I'm asking $185 plus shipping (Paypal, and if you're in the Chicago area, you can feel free to come and pick it up if you don't want to pay shipping).

Please see the pictures in my profile. PM me if you're interested, or want any more info.

Thanks!

Hi all,

I saw pictures once of dancers wearing what appeared to be like a corset type belt. I seem to recall that Tempest made them, but am not sure. Does anyone own one of these, or know where I might be able to have one made? Thanks!

I've got a performance coming up at a Pirate Festival and decided that I needed one of those nifty peasanty tops to wear under my uber kuchi coin bra. Time to buy? Of course not! But it was curiously easy to make.

Check out the tutorial here (it's incredible how quickly you can make this from a pre existing shirt - which, of course, means there's very little seam-finishing to do!)

I don't want to ruin my first attempt at sewing my own costume especially w/ the cost of patterns and materials. I am so afraid of messing up.

I am clearing out a bunch of belly dance inventory to make room for some new items, so I'm running a huge clearance sale. Hip scarves, jackets, bras, etc. Everything is free shipping, and you can make an offer and decide your own price-I want to get everything cleared out so I'm not turning down anything reasonable. If you're looking for something you can add to, or just some inexpensive belly dance items to add to your collection, this would be the place to look. I'll probably keep it running until everything is gone. :)

TUTORIAL: Quick and Easy Circle Skirt

Ever have a gig or a performance where you need a particular color of skirt? But, well, if you're like me you always seem to need what you don't have and don't realize it until the last minute. Last night, I needed either a white or silver skirt for two different costumes. It was a last-minute sort of need, and not one I could rectify with ebay ;) So, in sheer desparation, I headed into a thrift store, picked up a ball skirt, and transformed it into a circle skirt.

It worked quite well! I honestly had never thought of doing this until when the need arose so, if you've never considered re-purposing an old full skirt or prom dress, I can tell you it works great!

I made a tutorial of it (hope you all like it ;) ) because I wanted to remember how the heck I did this. It's super simple, and quick, and the results were great (helllloooo not having to hem the skirt or let it hang!):

The tutorial is here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mishakitty/sets/72157605119138444/
I'll post photos of how it looks on asap, but I wore it last night for a gig and got lots of compliments!

PS - I confess that I love making these tutorial thingys. Hope I don't annoy all of you by posting them!

Ok BIG question for me here. I just bought a 100% silk costume and my instructor wants me to add Paillettes to it before April 19 which is my first performance. I am REALLY concerned about ruingin the garments as I hae never hand stitched anything onto silk and I heard it can be tricky! What is the best way to do this? I need answers quickly!
Thanks.

Swords are banned in the UK

Hello all.
Please support you sisters in the UK. We are now banned from purchasing dance swords.

Sad news I'm afraid. I have just spoken to Jonathan Batt, at the home office who has confirmed that we (belly and tribal dancers in the UK) are covered in the VCR (Violent Crimes Reduction Bill).
As Belly dancers, we are not covered in the exemptions of being classed as a 'sporting activity' or a Historical reenactment. While we can perform with our existing swords, if you have public liability insurance. You can no longer purchase a new blade.

This is scary thought, as if we are not included in the exclusions to the ban, the art form of sword dancing will ultimately die out in the UK! my sword was broken recently In a workshop when it was dropped. I now can't get a new one....

The only way we can get this changed for all belly dancers is to contact the home office and request that as a dance form that we are allowed to continue to be allowed to purchase swords, so that we can continue with a beautiful art form.

Please, Please take the time to contact Jonathan and request that he put forward to the Home Office that bellydancers and tribal dancers are made exempt from the VCR Bill. He is a nice guy and has agreed to be the contact point for this query. It will take a huge volume of dancers contacting him to make a difference, so please take the time to write to him.

His contact details are Jonathan.Batt@Homeoffice.gsi.gov.uk

Also if you are a member of a tribe, where this is not mentioned, can you please post information there.

Quick question about rings

I just got 4 lovely, gorgeous Kuchi rings in the mail today :D (From lovely TribalKitty goddess ;) )
Anyway, I have very thin fingers and they shrink even more when it's cold so the rings fall off really easily.
Without cutting the metal and getting it resized, what would be your tips for product/material to stick/sew/tape/glue/tie to the inside of the rings to make 'em bulkier and nice and snug on my tiny fingers?
ANY ideas are welcome! :)
Thanks!

Avid quilter for ages. Bellydancer for only a couple of short years.

How many use quilting in the creation/formation of costumes?
Is there any use of quilting in costuming that I can see pics of?

I'll do it myself, but if people already know it's a lousy idea, I'd rather know now. Or if I'm blazing new trails, I guess I'd like to know that too.

In the years I've been on tribe I have found so much support that has brought me thru some really tough times. So much so that now I am opening my own business. In April I'll be opening an e-store called Tribal Kitty. It won't only be focusing on tribal bellydance items. It is more about my One Tribe, One World philosophy.

I plan on carrying items from hip scarves to tribal necklaces to costuming supplies and more. To get to the point, I would like to know what you would like to see in a store. Is there something that would have just been a lot easier to buy versus make? I know that some dancers are into the "can can" style now, so how would you like some petticoats? Funky tights? Gloves (lace, fishnet)?

I am talking to some tribal wholesalers now and have established accounts with some great general bellydance suppliers. But I want to know where you would like me to go next! And of course, coupons for all those who help!

Costuming Block!

*cross-post*

I've hit a costuming block. I've been working on a green-and-gold set for the Ren Faire and I'm stuck. Currently it consists of a decorated bra and a tiered satin skirt. I still have a turkist vest and a belt to make for the costume. I covered the bra in green stretch velvet with gold and green trim and gold tassels and pailettes and it looks very nice. My skirt is a dark kind of hunter green (slightly different from the emerald stretch velvet on the bra-which you can't see much of under the decorations) and I don't know what else to do. Originally I was going to try to do the belt in the same stretch velvet with gold tassels and the turkish vest in some sort of gold/green brocade. Except I can't find any gold and green brocade that's the right color!

While wandering aimlessly through a fabric store yesterday I found some nice green/burgundy/gold striped upholstry fabric that I think would really set off the gold in the bra and match my skirt but I don't think it would work with a green stretch-velvet belt. I thought maybe I could match the turkish vest to the belt (out of the same fabric) and still have it look pretty good but I'm not sure if it would work? I know a lot of dancer's match bra/belt so do you think it would be too bizarre to match vest/belt instead?

I need some pictures of tassel bras that I can check out to figure out tassel-placement on the bra I'm working on. This bra is my first serious costume bra and I'd like some tips about how to place the tassels! The tassels I have are on an inch wide band and are upholstry tassles. Any help, pics, or suggestions would be great!

Note: I'm busty so I will need to cover a lot of ground!

What type of skirt is this?

Okay, I am looking for a skirt used in this video:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=rz8T2DmeM-4

Not the exact same color or anything, but the style, i.e. the flowy material, with little gaps that allow the leg to peak through every now and then. Is there a paticular name for this style? Do you know of any online shops that carry it?

Thanks!

The seller said that these are the measurments but I didnt get to it first (3' long, 28.5" across (the material part) and then there are 13.5" of ties on either side)

kinda x-post Wig/Weave Clips or Headbands??

Ok... I am in need of some new head adornment stuff, but my head is not the proper shape to "tie" something to it like a scarf headband thing...

I also have super fine LONG straight hair that is put up while I dance... I have bangs and a horribly high forehead...

What do you use to keep your head adornments on??? do you sew them to a headband??? attach some weave clips??? www.doctoredlocks.com/store/w...s_m.html

I have one that I made and put some clipy barettes on, but it tends to slip out of my hair while dancing... I need something with a bit of grip, and no pain!

I'm leaning towards the weave clips...

Any tips??

THANKS!

Hello! I am a college student who is in need of a costume for a performance in april. I really need a tribal bra (32B) but I would like a complete outfit including either pants or skirt and fringe belt. Maybe some hair tassels too. I am on a budget being a college student so if anyone would be kind enough to sell me some costume stuff I would really appreciate it. Does anyone know where I can get a tribal skirt that isn't too expensive?

Hello all, I joined this tribe on the recommendation of a friend who's here too....I am definitely in the right place!

I have some Kuchi stuff in my profile that I am selling. They are new, (or as new as Kuchi can be!) stock from my website I've picked just for tribe :-) I do lay away too :-)

This tribe is awesome- no one warns you just how addictive bellydancing really is- and how much you'll spend on costuming! I'm so addicted I ended up starting my own business!
Hi, My name is Amara, and I'm a Bellydancing Costume Addict!

I'm new to bellydance. I'll be appearing in my second performance ever on Saturday, Feb. 23, '08.

I get the feeling that I'm going to get really, really, really tired of making tops. Because 90% of the sites out there, even the ones that claim to sell plus sizes, don't sell for DD cups or larger. Even in the fine print, it says, "Fits C cup."

I don't have the money to put into customized costumes every time, and I sew too.

My first performance, I cheated. Sport bra plus a tie-over that I made. This time I'm cheating, too. Baby doll T-shirt, modified to crop tank.

If anybody anywhere has had luck with purchasing tops for DD's on up, please post that info here. I can't be the only person having this trouble.

teal and brown bra and belt

you may see photos on page 4 and 5 in my pics
and email if you would like to have it through tribe or tcsdance@aol.com
This is a hand made costume. Both bra and belt are lined. The bra is very sturdy will hold it's shape well. The bra will fit a 32-34 A/B. This costume will work great for new students, hobbyist class recitals, parties, Goth night, belly fusion, photos, and performances.
This is an original one of a kind costume.

The bra will fit a 32-34 A/B. The bra is covered in a teal velvet panne' fabric. The bra is trimmed in a brown gimp trim about an inch wide, . Beneath the trim is a row of the tribal metal fringe. At the center of the bra is button ornament with a few dangle. The side panels and the straps are made from the same fabric that covers the bra cups. The bra ties across the back kris- cross with D-rings. The bra straps are 37 inches long.

The belt is cover in the same fabric as the bra. This belt 35 inches long not including the tie ends. This belt can be shorten before it is sent if needed. The tie ends are 15 inches long..The belt also has the same brown trim as on the bra .Below the trim are 7 dangle buttons. The ribbon fringe is made up of mixture of teal and brown yarn thick in texture in three groupings . Between each grouping of yarn fringe is a belled chain for added movement and sound.
As stated before this is a one of a kind piece of wearable art . The colors are very pretty and has really good movement to it
you will stand out in the crowd in this one
email with any questions or more photos 80.00 plus 6.00 shipping
(also the cosutme is a bit big for the model in the photo

I wish!...............New Cholis for Big Girls!

DD and up. That would be a laugh on me! :)

Seriously though I've been developing a super duper new sexy, split sleeve choli for big dancers. My stock cholis do indeed stretch up to an F cup but I wanted something that would work for larger framed dancers too. The standard choli works for dancers up to about a UK size 18 if they're about 5 foot five or below but there's definitely a need for something for taller, larger framed dancers too.

Sooo! I now have a gorgeous choli, along the lines of the very popular Pedralta Split Choli www.pedralta.com/shop/tops/007-001.htm but it has s slightly fuller back and a deeper band under the bust, making it really comfortable and secure, although most dancers should be able to find a bra to fit underneath.

I'm afraid I don't have a picture yet, as the prototype went to a workshop last weekend and nearly caused a scrap. Several dancers tried it on and one took it home with her. :)

More are on the way, along with photos. They're perty! They're sexy!

What shall I call them? Goddess size? XL? Cholis for juicy dancers? Help me out please.

I need a few specific items for my dance wardrobe that I really don't want to make. Can we post "wanted" ads here? I try to buy used items for my costumes as it's a) recycling, b) more cost effective. Thanks!

Attaching tummy covers

I'm back dancing after having a baby, but now I'm wearing a tummy cover because of stretch marks. I have it attached to the bra with about 6 clasps, but they keep coming unhooked in the middle of my shows. Does anyone have any advice as to how to get attach them better?

Did Someone Here Mention Faded Sequins on Their New Pharaonics?

I've been searching for a post for a long time now and I can't seem to find it.

A dancer ordered a brand new Pharaonics and it seemed like pre used sequins were applied in areas of the costume.

Am I on the right board?

Attempting to customise a skirt!!

Ive decided to try and do my first ever bit of customising!!

I don't even own a sewing machine lol..only time I ever get out the needle and cotton is to sew on ballet elastics and alter clothing, darn socks holes etc.....

I have a plain red satin circle skirt that Im going to attempt to add a layer of black netting & some more black & gold material to the bottom of the skirt, I'll have it hitched up at the front to show my lacy fluffie ruffle pants that Kathleen made me..

The woman in my local crafty place was FAB, helped pick the materials, told me to pin paper to the skirt and then to the material so that I get the right sizing, cut etc...

Just really crapping myself about messing it up now, hoping one of the belly ladies who has a sewing machine can give me a hand this week!

Any tips would be most welcome!! (Ive posted this on a few other costume sites too)

Rush Orders--Writing a Custom Sewing Contract Part II

Do you even take rush orders?

What kind of clause (if any) do you include in your contract?

Do you charge more for rush orders?

While it would be nice to say no to rush orders, sometimes as a freelancer I have to occasionally take what I can get when I can get it.

What I usually tell clients is that if they want a rush order, that I can't garuantee that they will be getting EXACTLY what they expect--and I also tell them that I will often be working up until the very last minute, especially since there can be unexpected delays or issues. If this is okay with them, then we proceed, if it isn't, then we don't. Is this what you do too or do you have something else that you tell your clients?
Flaming Sword Kits available for a limited time

Flaming Sword Kit by Amy Luna
as seen in the DVD "By Dancers For Dancers, Volume 1"

While cleaning out my closet, I found some extra flaming sword kits leftover from when I taught my flaming sword workshop at the Crucible's Fire Arts Festival a couple of years ago. The effect is a 4-5 inch flame that stays lit on the very tip of the end of your sword while you dance,

To view a photo of the effect go to http://www.amyluna.com/flamingsword.jpg

To view a video of the effect, go to http://www.amyluna.com/bdfd1.html

Simple, safe, portable, and with no modifications to your precious sword. Quick and easy prep makes this a dancer's dream when hurriedly preparing for your show in that cramped dressing room. Everything you need for dozens of performances. Also includes tips on costume and fire safety, of course.

Testimonial:
"Thank you so much for the wonderful "flaming sword" workshop. I hadn't had the nerve to try it out until last Sunday at our student night at El Morocco. Everyone enjoyed it & the flame stayed flamed up the entire performance. It was too cool & I'm so glad it worked - your instructions & tips were great!" - Malilka

$40 + $3.50 s & h

please email me or Paypal me at amyluna@amyluna.com if you are interested. I don't know when or if I'll make more kits and I'm getting ready to travel out of the country for a few months so...get 'em while they're hot 'cause when they're gone, they're gone! Good luck!

I have an opportunity to acquire some brass dies for making middle eastern jewelry. Before spending the $$, I would like to know if anyone has had experience with the making of Kuchi jewelry. What is it made of? Anyone have any suggestions for materials and processes? Silver, copper and gold are out, too pricey for my budget!!

wire in belts?

hey yall!
So I'm working on a new beaded dance belt, using some sturdy materials but I'm still worried! The design has points that peak in the middle of the back of the belt. I'm afraid with all the beading I will be doing on it that these points will soon begin to sag and look frumpy. Can't have a saggy belt! I have heard of a tip where before you cover the belt form in your fabric, to line the points with a piece of wire in order to secure and reinforce the peaks of the points. However, I've never tried it before and so I was wondering if anyone out there in Tribe land has and has any suggestions or tips such as what gauge wire to use? Thanks guys!
xoxo

This isn't exactly a costume construction question. It's more of a costume wear question.

Would anyone know of a product that can be applied to the skin underneath costumes that have a tendency to slip and move around? For example, those beaded cab skirt costumes (worn w/o a belt) that are usually lycra-ish. Is there something you can apply to your skin under the costume.... something sticky perhaps... that will keep the costume from moving around and yet not ruin or stain the fabric?

Any suggestions are most appreciated!!

I have never done any veil-work, but I have a ton of fabric that is dying to be turned into veils. Is there a standard or common size for a veil?

I'm Having a Creative Block!

Okay, now that the holidays are over I'm ready to get back to creating something new. BUT I'm having a creative block! I've got so much fabric, beads, ideas, etc. but I can't seem to focus on getting something started. I have so many costumes already but I have to be working on something. I have some beautiful purple/gold sari fabric that I would like to do something with. Any suggestions?

TO LENGTHEN A SKIRT THAT IS OK BUT A TAD TOO SHORT

I add a “mud ruffle” or “ribbon”of silky fabric. Figure out how much too short it is. Double that. Add 1” for seam allowance. (If it’s more than 3” too short, this may not look as good.) So if it’s 2” too short, you need bands of 5”of fabric. Measure the circumference of the bottom of the skirt. Divide by the width of the fabric, usually 45”; that’s how many 5” pieces you will need. I’ve been using Silkessence, that $4/yd poly stuff that’s always at JoAnn’s. With a 40% off coupon, it’s MUCH cheaper than wide ribbon. The striped gored skirt from Sam’s I fixed up recently required seven widths of 5” of fabric. That’s 35” of fabric, less than a yard. I buy a little extra though, as I want it on the straight grain. I sit in front of TV after dinner and cut my little 5” bands, selvage to selvage. I make a little cut in the selvage and then pull a cross-wise thread, getting a true straight of the goods. This is, to me, less finicky then trying to use a ruler for a straight line across. I don’t even use a table. So I cut all my 5” pieces, then seam them together into one humongous long piece, then iron it in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. I zig-zag it on the long raw edge, keeps it together while handling and from fraying. I sew it to the bottom of the skirt. This is another time when that 1/8” cheap ribbon from JoAnn’s makes a nice embellishment. If you are careful, you can sew ribbon, hem, and extension pieces all at once. I sewed all three layers once with a stitched zig-zag with metallic thread in the upper thread. Used some of that silicone liquid Sewer’s Aid on the metallic thread spool so the dratted stuff wouldn’t break every three inches. It works! I will cut out the restrictive attached slip or at least slit it up the side. Hate those things. Could use the fabric for sleeves or choli.

THREE INTO ONE SKIRT CONVERSION

We all buy cheapo skirts for practice that aren't full enough for nice tribal looks. But I have several skirts with a full price of around $20. I buy three identical skirts on close-out at Walmart, Ross, Bell's Outlet, and convert them into one. I use basically one top, two middles, and three bottom tiers.

You have to finagle the top and the two middle layers so that the whole thing is long enough for YOU. Typical lengths for a full length skirt such as we use, from the bottom of the waist band to the bottom of the skirt, are 34” for short, 35” for medium, 36-37” for tall, and 38” for Mary. I’m 5’8” and I make mine 37”. Don’t forget to make a seam allowance when you cut your tiers, about ½ inch will do, makes it easier to figure than that printed pattern 5/8” stuff.

I use the top layer, with its elastic or drawstring, as it was when the skirt was made. Easier that way. If the skirt is already tiered, I cut the tiers apart into three tiers with a seam ripper. If no tiers, I decide ontier widths. My preferred length is 37”, I’m 5’8” tall. So for these for example 34” skirts, I will make the top tier about 10” long, cutting it 10 ½” to include a seam. Then I will cut the all important bottom layer, I’d like it to be a little longer, I’ll make it 14” long, cut 14.5”, don’t forget we are using the bottom hem as it is. The middle layer will be 13”, must cut two middles 14” long, seam allowance top and bottom. I will cut out the restrictive attached slip or at least slit it up the side. Hate those things. Fabric left over from liner or pieces not used will make admirable little sleeves, or a little choli or vest, or something.. So 10” + 13” + 14” = 37”, my preferred length. Measure a skirt you like the length of from the bottom of the waistband, then you’ll know what you need in made to measure or ready-to-wear.

For finishing purposes at this point I zig-zag over the raw edges. This fabric is usually pretty cheesy, and can use some help to hold together. Then on the edges that need to be gathered, I zig-zag over monofilament fishing line. One spool lasts a long time. Don’t get it too thick; I thought that would be good but it ISN’T; the fabric kind of wraps around the thicker monotfilament with the zig zag and is harder to manage. Thin monofilament is best. Mark your quarters and eights of the way around on ruffle and body so the gathers will be more or less even. Sew on to the tier above, then remove the monofilament. Usually you can pull it out whole and re-use it. Sometimes if you have sewed over it you have to take it out in pieces. Oh well. You’re done!! I have also embellished skirts at the hem with the cheap narrow ribbon you can get at JoAnn’s for less than a dollar for a ten yard spool.

You can do this with two skirts, using the top fabric from one to add to the top of the other. I’ve done this. But three skirts are better. It makes skirts that are quite skimpy into a voluminous whole. Skirts are sometimes on sale at the end of the season at Walmart for quite a savings. I just bought three matching skirts at Ross for $5 each. Normal lengths sold for gypsy skirts by Jewel of India, are 34”, 36” and 38”. Measure your skirt with the best skirt length, see what you like.

The problem is I have about four of these "in process".. need to get some DONE.
